About This Role

Develop and implement comprehensive fire safety plans mine wide and conduct regular fire risk assessments and safety audits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure relevant Safety, Mining and other statutory Codes and Regulations remain in full compliance at every workplace.
  • Train emergency responders and the general staff on fire prevention, evacuation drills and firefighting protocols
  • Test and assure that firefighting equipment (extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire alarms, sprinkler system and fire hydrants) are in operating condition.
  • Conduct regular fire alarm tests and fire drills
  • Respond to all fire alarms; determines whether a fire exists; attempts to extinguish fire and liaise with the Ghana National Fire Service.
  • Assist in supervision and coordination of activities of workers engaged in pit mining
  • Demonstrate in principles and practices high-level of understanding in HIRA and Control measures as well as design of SWP and operating manual/plan associated with general surface mining and particularly with open pit mining.
  • Ensure HSE compliance in pit mining – Drill & Blast; Load, Haul & Dump as well as PPE use.
  • Assist in maintaining high level of discipline and good behavioural HSE culture in the pit and beyond.
  • Educate, create awareness and enforce Safe Working Procedures regarding open pit mining operations and its related activities.
  • Assist in ensuring pit inductions, re-inductions, incident management, ERP, Risk reviews, audits, procedural management etc.
  • Lead and apply best practices and continuous improvements interventions to deliver sustainable cost, efficiency and personnel health and wellness programmes.
  • Assist in conducting General HSE and visitors’ inductions.
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of local government agencies, shareholders’ interests, environmental health and safety legislation and company regulation.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor or authorized delegate.

Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies

  • First degree in health & safety management or tertiary qualification in Engineering (Mining, Electrical, Mechanical) or a related qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Possess HSE certificate of competency issued by MINCOM.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ working experience in a mining industry and an exposure to Health and Safety Operations.
  • Experience in implementing and enforcing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and training employees on safety procedures.
  • Ability to develop processes and procedures that integrate behavioural aspects into a system and be able to integrate across the departments.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the Duty of Care Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations, and Mining Inspection Act & Regulations
  • Strong knowledge of fire safety regulations and procedures
  • Possess a valid Ghanaian drivers' license and ability to drive.
