About This Role
Plan and co-ordinate short term ventilation requirements for the mine in line with the established mine plans and Ghana Mining Regulations, ensuring Chirano provides an occupational environment which is conducive to good health, safety and productivity (through anticipation, monitoring, recognition, evaluation and control of factors that may cause adverse or dangerous conditions).
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure relevant Safety, Mining and other statutory Codes and Regulations remain in full compliance at the workplace.
- Practice and promote Company environmental, health, safety and operational policies and procedures and actively participate in the Company’s Continuous Improvement Programme.
- Ensure relevant Safety, Mining and other statutory Codes and Regulations remain in full compliance, and actively promote Safety Culture and Hazard Awareness on the Mine.
- Evaluate and propose optimum ventilation engineering solutions to facilitate the optimal extraction of gold ore from the underground mining operation.
- Participate in emergency responses in the event of a mine fire.
- Work closely with mine planning, survey, geology, maintenance and operations to ensure continuous improvement of mine ventilation.
- Conduct annual refresher training for the underground workforce on the use of basic ventilation instruments.
- Conduct ventilation survey at all active and inactive headings including volumetric survey, pressure survey across return air ways (RAWs), gases and fire monitoring.
- Investigate and take measures to prevent actual/ potential environmental incidents in the areas of responsibility.
- Identify the environmental aspects of all activities/areas of oversight responsibilities and provide appropriate mitigation measures.
- Maintain a ventilation instrument register and ensure all calibrations are scheduled.
- Apply for exemption and take exemption measurements with the Inspector of Mines.
- Inspect active and inactive headings consistently for hazards and ensure all hazards identified are corrected on time.
- Update underground ventilation plans.
- Produce daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly ventilation reports to all stakeholders.
- Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the ventilation systems of the Mine.
- Continuous monitoring and inspections of surface and underground ventilation infrastructure and report on their operating performance.
- Assist with the establishment and implementation of ventilation standards and protocol for underground Operations.
- Develop safe working procedures and continually update SOP’s when necessary.
- Lead execution of strategies to enhance current ventilation practices and performances in achieving the organization’s overall strategy.
- Contribute to the business' capability to mine safely by actively identifying risks and threats to achieving targets and develop & manage programs to minimize or eliminate those risks
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor or authorized delegate.
Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies
- First degree in Mining Engineering or related field of study from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of one (1) year working experience in mine ventilation.
- In-depth knowledge in exemption application and exemption measurement with an inspector of mines.
- A knowledge of Ventilation on Demand systems is highly desirable.
- Relevant experience in ventilation best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team and conduct risk assessments.
- Relevant experience in the use of Surpac and AutoCAD, knowledge of Ventsim software and MS Office suites.
- Ability to demonstrate understanding and executing of Project works, Mine Operations and other ventilation activities at underground.
- Possess a valid Ghanaian drivers' License.
