About This Role

To co-ordinate Safety programs geared towards the promotion of Health & Safety standards, prevention of personal injuries and property loss at the Underground operations of the Mine and its adjoining facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Practice and promote Company environmental, health, safety and operational policies and procedures and actively participate in the Company’s Continuous Improvement Program
  • Ensure relevant Safety, Mining and other statutory Codes and Regulations remain in full compliance, and actively promote Safety Culture and Hazard Awareness on the Mine.
  • Assist in identifying and correcting unsafe work practices or conditions before accident occur, through regular inspection and fostering the safety attitude among the workforce during these visits.
  • Assist in conducting planned inspection/audits using checklist periodically, aimed at evaluating compliance with standards and checking the state of safety of all equipment.
  • Assist in ensuring that all the statutory requirements that have bearing on occupational Health and Safety are complied with.
  • Participate in inspections and inquiries by the Mine Inspectors.
  • Assist in conducting formal risks assessment of the underground activities and ensure that all significant risks identified from the assessment as well as all other sources, such as audit reports, are captured and that appropriate corrective actions are planned and implemented.
  • Assist in conducting investigations into the causes of all accidents, recommending, and enforcing the implementation of remedial measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist in conducting periodic planned job observations on various categories of the employees to enhance safe work practices.
  • Assist in conducting periodic on-the-job training for the various categories of workers to heighten their safety awareness to ensure they carry out their tasks in a safety manner.
  • Assist in ensuring that the PPEs supplied to employees and other working equipment and tools meet the Company’s standards and enforce their use where necessary.
  • Develop safe working procedures and continually update SOP’s when necessary.
  • Contribute to the business' capability to mine safely by actively identifying risks and threats to achieving targets and develop & manage programs to minimize or eliminate those risks.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor or authorized delegate.

Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies

  • First degree in Mining, Sciences, or Engineering with a minimum of three (3) years of Underground Safety exposure.
  • Possess HSE certificate of competency issued by MINCOM.
  • Familiar with Safety & Environment management/business solutions (software).
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism, integrity, and candor in daily work ethics.
  • In-depth knowledge and ability to spot hazards across a wide range of disciplines on the mine site
  • Ability to multi-task, take initiatives and prioritize workloads.
  • Strong computer literacy skills – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, MS Project).
  • Be proactive and with good problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to lead a team and conduct risk assessments.
  • Possess a valid Ghanaian drivers' license and ability to drive underground.
